First in my family to go to University

I was the first in my family to go to university, although I didn’t take the normal path of finishing sixth form and then going straight away. After I finished sixth form, I joined the workforce, it wasn’t until a few years later that a friend recommended I look into the tech opportunities that would allow me to explore my creative side more.

That’s when I started working for Sky. They were just starting their Developer Apprenticeship Programme, and I thought it might be a good starting point. I went far in the interview process, but ultimately, I didn’t have much experience coding, so I went on a different route and started working in their call centre.  

After being there for three years and my role changing, as I was eager to learn and train others, I decided to go to university to pursue Computer Science as a degree. The opportunities I had to work with developers and designers had really inspired me.

Finding the right course

I looked for foundation degrees first because I wanted to build on my skill set.  I had been out of education and worked for five years so I wanted something that could help build my skills - this is when I came across Leeds Trinity University.

I submitted my application and received a conditional offer which required me to submit an essay. Not long after that, I was accepted into the foundation year for Computer Science. I started in September 2020, and as expected we started learning html, CSS, JavaScript and also python. I found the course well laid out, everything was articulately explained, and I was able to pass.

Self-learning to build up to first year of undergraduate study

During the summer I worked hard to improve my skills and took part in Code First Girls Coding Courses in python. I also self-learnt other materials to improve my skills.

Because of Covid, as a class we didn’t do much speaking outside of the lectures but that all changed after the first year. The lectures were more in person, I was able to make friends within the class and we all supported each other throughout the degree. This really helped me because I was able to learn from those around me, I don’t think I would be able to graduate without the help and support of my wonderful classmates and the amazing support from my lecturers. Although the first year was challenging to keep up, I remained on course.

Improving each year

I found the second year a little easier, and I was able to improve my skills and my grades even more, which was a proud achievement. At the same time, my friendships became even closer amongst my classmates and we always encouraged each other, especially during critical times such as placements.  Our lecturers were always available to help too.

The third year was a whirlwind in between learning a lot of new skills. There were also times where we got to celebrate our final year together including the Dean’s Awards, visiting Bletchley Park and attending the Graduation Ball. It all came full circle showing the hard work paid off!

After graduating in a field that I’m very proud of I’m excited for the future and to welcome and encourage the next generation of women in tech. I was also delighted to be awarded a full scholarship to study MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Leeds Trinity!
