Planning for Progression

This course is aimed at non-RE teachers working in Catholic schools who hold a PGCE in a subject other than Religious Studies who are looking to move into the teaching of RE. The course will focus on developing Catholic subject knowledge and on the Catholic curriculum.

The course comprises completion of the 30 credit Level 7 independent study module, Planning for Progression, with support and input from subject specialists in Religious Education at Leeds Trinity University and the Diocese of Middlesborough. You will be invited to attend structured group sessions to support you to develop, undertake and evaluate a work-based investigation and report the outcomes.

You will develop your understanding of RE and Catholic education delivered in schools through reading and reflection, create a sequence or plan of learning designed to develop pupils subject understanding of the topic, and address anticipated difficulties and/or misconceptions that might arise. You will also conduct an investigation into the impact of your teaching on pupils’ understanding.

For the duration of the course, you will have timetabled teaching of RE within your school. This teaching will be recorded and will contribute towards your evidence portfolio. This part of the course is non-credit bearing, but your portfolio will be reviewed by Leeds Trinity University and the Diocese of Middlesborough and you will be issued with a certificate of completion.

All students will also enrol in a subject knowledge course delivered by the Diocese of Middlesborough.

Course Structure

The course is delivered online and comprises lectures, seminars, guided learning and personal tutoring, supported by work-based learning and independent study.

Delivery of the course involves 2 x 2 hour sessions which take place online on Saturday mornings.  The first session will introduce you to the course and the second session will offer an opportunity to discuss and reflect on a formative task

Additional individual tutorial support of up to 2 hours will be provided online.

Assessment

For the credit bearing module, you will be assessed through an essay (4,000 words) and appendices (2,000 words).

The non-credit bearing evidence portfolio will be reviewed independently.
