Course overview

The world of Finance has evolved rapidly over the past few years with the emphasis on digitalisation and technological innovations giving birth to a new discipline known as Financial Technology.

Financial Technology, popularly known as FinTech, spreads across diverse areas such as lending, digital banking, blockchain, cryptocurrency, digital currency, regtech, alternative finance, artificial intelligence and machine learning in finance.

Our MSc Financial Technology programme aims to address the gaps between digital banking and traditional banking services as well as offer you the most current financial and technical skills required for you to succeed in the fast-growing FinTech industry.

About this course

On this programme, you will gain an understanding of current developments in FinTech and Digital Banking and will be provided with the relevant hard and soft skills in a wide of range of areas relevant to the sector.

You'll explore topics such as digital payment systems, financial appraisal, and cryptocurrencies and consider emerging technologies and their applications in finance such as blockchain, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

During your studies, you'll learn about entrepreneurship, regulations and risk management to ensure that you are well-equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of financial technology ready to pursue a successful career in the financial technology industry.

You'll gain an understanding of research methods and analytics, preparing you for the advanced research needed when you complete the Masters Research Project where you will demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme of study to solve a real-world issue, problem, or contribution to a specific field.

Year 1

Financial Technology and Digital Banking - Core

The module will cover a range of topics essential for the understanding of the complexities of the world of financial technology and digital banking. You will develop critical thinking and analytical skills as you apply theoretical and practical knowledge to real-world challenges in the field of financial technology and digital banking.  Themes covered include: Understanding the Financial Technology Landscape and Digital Banking; Modern Payment Ecosystem; Financial Analysis and Appraisal Techniques; Alternative Finance; Emerging and Future Trends.

Emerging Technologies in Finance - Core

This module covers a broad range of topics to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the subject, such as an introduction to emerging technologies in finance, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in finance; applications of blockchain technology in finance, such as digital currencies, smart contracts; and supply chain finance and the use of case studies and practical applications to explore the integration of emerging technologies in finance. 

Entrepreneurship, Regulations and Risk Management - Core

This module is designed to ensure that you will be well-equipped to navigate the dynamic landscape of financial technology and covers entrepreneurial skills, regulatory understanding and risk management giving you the expertise needed for a successful career in the financial technology industry.

Research Methods and Analytics - Core

You'll gain a well-rounded understanding of research methods and analytics, preparing you for advanced research by exploring research and literature reviews, studying research methodology and ethical considerations in the research process, and learning about qualitative and quantitative analytics.

Masters Research Project - Core

The Masters Research Project allows you to demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout the programme of study to solve a real-world issue, problem or contribution to a specific field. This project will have three routes - research, consultancy or new venture creation and will commonly include a literature review, research design and methodology, methods of data analysis, context of consultancy and new venture creation.

Leeds Trinity Alumni Discount

Some Leeds Trinity graduates are eligible for a tuition fee discount on postgraduate courses of up to 50%, excluding PGCE Delivery Partner Model and Lead Partner Model, and Masters by Research courses. You will need to achieve a 2:2 or above in a Leeds Trinity undergraduate course to qualify.

Applications for September 2024 entry are now closed. Applications for 2025 entry open in early October.

There is no official closing date for applications, but the course will be closed when it is full. We therefore encourage you to make your application as early as possible.

Home applicants - How to apply

Applicants who require a Student Route Visa

Applications for September 2024 entry are now closed for students requiring a Student Route Visa in order to study in the UK. Applications for 2025 entry are due to open in early October.

If you require a Student Route Visa in order to study in the UK, then you must apply to us by Sunday 30 June 2024.

Part-time study is not available for international students on a Student Route Visa.

What happens next?

Our admissions team will acknowledge receipt of your application by email.

Where applications are submitted but references are still in progress, admissions will wait for the reference(s) to be received and then will process it, and forward it to the relevant Programme Leader within five days of receipt of the reference(s).

The Programme Leader will make a decision based on your application. You may be asked to provide a reference to demonstrate your academic and non-academic experiences, or you may be invited to attend an interview. If you are successful and are made an offer, the conditions will be outlined in your offer letter. 

Applications will be acknowledged within five working days. Applicants will be contacted within 15 working days with a request for additional information, invite to an informal interview or an application decision.

If you accept, you'll need to prove you satisfy the conditions outlined in your offer letter.

You may be asked to present the relevant supporting documentation in person to the student information point on campus, if originals are not needed you’ll be contacted and given details of how to provide the supporting documentation.
