Digital and Screen Media students put skills to the test with Yorkshire production company

A group of Digital and Screen Media students from Leeds Trinity University demonstrated their knowledge by applying their creative skills in a filming-based project with a prospective parliamentary candidate.

Working in collaboration with Yorkshire-based production company Ryle Cox Media, the fast-paced project saw students direct and film exclusive content with the company that will be used across Anna Dixon’s social media channels in the coming months. Ryle Cox Media is working with Anna, who is the Labour parliamentary candidate for Shipley, and other local and regional candidates, to deliver high quality social media content to support their campaigns in the run up to the next General Election.

The company work with the best young filmmakers in the UK, helping to build their portfolio of work by providing a platform to utilise their skills and create impactful films and content. Ryle Cox Media, whose team has worked in TV and film production for over 30 years, provide guidance and mentorship to young filmmakers, making this a valuable and educational experience for Leeds Trinity students.

The four students involved, Leo Allot, Tom Hoy, James Fletcher and Freya Jorgensen, organised the opportunity as part of their requirement to complete a placement or work-based learning in each year of their studies. Leeds Trinity’s unique approach to real world experience has helped the University develop a reputation for producing highly employable graduates.

Over the afternoon of filming, students had the opportunity to meet Anna, ask direct questions and put into practice the filmmaking and journalism skills they have been developing throughout their studies.

Journalism student James Fletcher said: “The experience really opened my eyes to how journalism and film coincide with politics, and that there are many jobs available to me after I graduate."

Film student Tom Hoy added: “Applying the skills we learn in university to something that can make a difference locally was both inspiring and gratifying."

Richard Greatrex, Programme Leader in Television Production, said: “This is a perfect example of the sort of opportunities students can find as part of their placements and professional learning. Working on professional productions and receiving support and tips from those with years of skills and experience in the industry is invaluable for students and their development. The feedback from Ryle Cox has been very positive, with the students’ ability to effectively contribute to filming, editing and designing highlighted. I am proud of our students and look forward to seeing them flourish throughout their studies and careers.”
