A charity appeal at Leeds Trinity University has helped spread festive cheer in the community by ensuring hundreds of local children living in poverty will receive a gift this Christmas.

The Little Stars campaign inspired staff and students to donate more than 1400 items, each chosen specially for a child supported by the appeal’s partner charities – Leeds Children’s Charity, Catholic Care, and Bradford Baby Bank.

Hannah Hayward, a part of the University’s Chaplaincy team that led on Little Stars, said: “The driving force behind this campaign was the idea of putting smiles on the faces of children during what can be a difficult time of year for people living in poverty.

“To see staff and students embrace Little Stars and provide so many items has been awe-inspiring and provided me with another reminder of why I love being part of this community – we are a generous, compassionate, and mission-minded organisation rooted in Catholic values. We’re delighted with the outcome, and I hope this is the beginning of a wonderful new Christmas tradition at Leeds Trinity.”

The campaign was brought to life through Christmas trees at the University’s Horsforth and Leeds City Campuses, each decorated with tags featuring a suggested gift. Staff and students were invited to choose a tag, purchase the corresponding item, and return it in exchange for a star to hang on the tree – providing the inspiration for the Little Stars name.

Almost 600 tags were taken over the course of the month-long appeal, including over 70 on the first day alone, with many gift-buyers generously choosing to purchase multiple items per tag.

With the collection now complete, the University’s Chaplaincy team will help the charities deliver the 1400 gifts, which range from colouring books to football equipment and musical instruments, to the children in time for Christmas Day.

Lisa Williams, Head of Fundraising at Leeds Children’s Charity, said: “I offer a huge and heartfelt thank you to the Leeds Trinity University Chaplaincy for championing the appeal, and to the wonderful students and staff at Leeds Trinity. Thanks to their generosity, local children who might not have had a gift to open this Christmas will now experience the joy and warmth of the season from their local community. Your kindness truly makes a difference.”

Matt Lomas, CEO of Catholic Care, added:The generosity shown through the Little Stars Christmas appeal will bring immeasurable joy to children across our diocese. For many families facing hardship, these gifts will be a powerful reminder that they are seen, valued and supported. It’s been truly inspiring to witness everyone come together to shine light and hope into the lives of our young people this Christmas.”
